i'm addicted to the internet and my macbook pro. namely, checking my gmail, facebook, meebo, and nytimes. if i find a moment to pause, when i wake up, when i go to bed, on the way to the bathroom, or after or during a meal, i pause at my laptop. we just installed cable in our home with hdtv on our flatscreen yesterday. i would expect this to divert my internet attention and prompt me to sit hours on my couch surfing hbo channels. but in fact, it's done the amazing thing of disconnecting me completely and i found myself reading. perhaps it's because the internet was my only gateway to the outside world, and so i clawed at it every chance i got. now that i have a gazillion channels (and even the ability to watch movies currently in showing at IFC), there's no longer this bottleneck at my laptop and things feel more whole, complete. i feel more inclined to spend my morning with my hard copy of the times, read my book, take a walk, listen to music, call a friend. to unplug is not simply to quit cold turkey, but to distribute and shift centers of attention. to proliferate or create excess of certain affections, paradoxically, is to diminish desire for those very things.

i rest my face on my hands a lot. it's because i'm so smart and thus my brain is so heavy. we changed handsoaps this week and method white tea creamy soap has a delicious scent. it makes face-resting wonderfully aromatic.

so. i'm no serious coffee person. quite casual about it and will drink if it's there. but i got a free 1-cup french press from a friend who was throwing it away. exciting. my first coffee maker! then i went to a small coffee shop and bought java beans and was asked if i wanted them ground. i thought it would be fresher to grind myself. then i bought a grinder. then i ma de a cup of coffee. it was delicious. then we're having thanksgiving at our place and thought it might be nice to make coffee for that. then i thought it's ridiculous to have to press coffee a zillion times for cups for everyone. then i went out and bought an 8-cup french press.

it's funny how something for free ends up making me invest a lot of time and money into a new form of consumerism in my life.

headhunters are so funny. i had drinks with friends, and one of their friends was a headhunter. it's like they can never stop working, and especially when they are "playing" or being social is when they are working the hardest. within 4 minutes he gave me his business card with his "personal email" after also explaining how he likes to talk on a personal level among friends before going the business route right away. they just can't help it can they...
